Sustainability Performance key to a climate-neutral and circular society

Positioned at the core of European manufacturing, the chemical industry is essential for achieving a climate-neutral and circular society. It plays a key role in realising the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals and enabling access to decent living standards for a projected 9.7 billion people by 2050, all within the planetary boundaries.

To track the chemical industry’s transition towards a safe, resource-efficient, and circular economy within a climate-neutral Europe, a portfolio of Sustainable Development Indicators (SDIs) has been developed. These indicators measure the industry’s transition progress. The SDIs align with those used by the UN and the EU to monitor the success of policies such as the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability, the Circular Economy Action Plan, and the Chemical Industry Transition Pathway.

The SDIs align and contribute to the EU Green Deal goals, tracking progress in key areas: circularity, climate, environment, people and prosperity.

As the chemical industry calls for an Industrial Deal to complement the Green Deal, restoring the business case for investment and boosting competitiveness, it will help ensure the investments needed for Europe’s sustainable industrial transformation.
