Summary

The Eruopean Commission’s Implementing Act lays down rules regarding the calculation, verification and reporting of data on recycled plastic content in
single-use plastic beverage bottles under the Single Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) which Cefic supports. In its reply to the Consultation on the European Commission’s draft Implementing Act concerning single-use plastics (SUPD),

Cefic calls for:

  • More inclusive language in the Act to include plastics in PET and non-PET bottles resulting from chemical recycling.
  • A harmonised EU rule to calculate chemically recycled content through mass balance
  • Timely implementation of a methodology to calculate, verify and report recycled plastic content in beverage bottles for content not obtained by mechanical recycling of PET waste to ensure legal certainty.
  • A mass balance chain of custody for chemical recycling depolymerisation processes to effectively leverage existing infrastructure and to repurpose existing industrial installations for the circular economy
  • Continuous updates to regulations to include emerging recycling technologies to support the circular economy transition.
