Demand for electricity is rising as Europe’s green energy transition picks up speed and a growing number of sectors looks for ways to electrify their operations, including chemicals. One thing is clear – supply of renewable electricity will need to increase significantly to meet demand as some of the latest figures confirm.
Ahead of the expected ‘Fit for 55’ package, Cefic President Martin Brudermüller and Chairman of WindEurope Andreas Nauen, have called in an interview to Financial Times for a rapid expansion of renewable energy and voice concerns that Europe risks falling behind China and US in decarbonization efforts.
The EU chemical industry will need access to abundant, competitive, reliable renewable energy as a key enabler of its industrial transformation. The pace of this transformation will also depend on breakthrough innovations, demand for low-carbon products and the development of an integrated and improved energy infrastructure supported by strong trade relations.
The upcoming ‘Fit for 55 package’ is an opportunity to ensure the EU doesn’t fall behind in the global race for climate neutrality.
At the same time, as Europe scales up its production of wind energy, we need to find innovative solutions to handling wind turbine waste. Here again the chemical industry can help.
