Combine renewable energy with bio-based raw materials and get climate neutral polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is a building block for many products, think of the panels used to build your greenhouse, the lenses in your glasses, or the luggage you use on your business trips. What if we told you that it is now possible to have polycarbonate that is climate neutral?

Covestro has started supplying climate-neutral polycarbonate from its Uerdingen site in Germany. The polycarbonate is climate-neutral thanks to the use of renewable electricity in production processes and the introduction of mass balanced raw materials coming from attributed sources as bio-waste and residues. This climate-neutral polycarbonate has the same quality and performance as fossil-based polycarbonates, and can be used in existing processes or workflows without the need for any modification.

To enable a circular economy of plastics, an integral part of the production process for polycarbonate, is the adoption of a mass balance approach. It is able to track materials through the value chains and allows attribution of alternative feedstock, like bio-based raw materials, to selected end products.
