The journey of petrochemicals explained: from raw materials to 95% of all manufactured goods

Petrochemicals Europe, an industry group of Cefic, has recently updated its flowchart, illustrating the complex journey of petrochemicals from raw materials to everyday products. The updated chart reflects the industry’s initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint and diversify its feedstock. 

The petrochemicals industry is a vital part of the global economy, providing the building blocks for 95% of all manufactured goods worldwide, from pharmaceuticals, building isolation, and smartphones to sportswear and wind turbines.  

The production of petrochemicals is a highly energy-intensive process that results in the release of a significant amount of greenhouse gases. Today, the industry is committed to undergoing a major transition towards sustainability: becoming climate neutral, increasing circularity, digitalising and implementing the Chemical Strategy for Sustainability, whilst also remaining globally competitive.  

The updated chart reflects the industry’s journey to reaching climate goals, featuring new sources of feedstock such as bio naphtha, bioethanol, pyrolysis oil, hydrogen, and bio and recycled materials. Additionally, the industry is working on innovative technologies like the electrification of cracker furnaces and sites, carbon capture and storage, recycling, and improving product and process safety. 

By embracing new sources of feedstock and energy, and investing in new technologies, the petrochemicals industry is taking an important step towards a more sustainable future, while still providing the essential building blocks for modern life.
