New EU Pharma Strategy an encouraging sign to help build a resilient and sustainable EU health industry

Brussels, 26 November 2020 – The European Commission presented its much-awaited and ambitious Pharmaceutical Strategy for Europe on 25 November to ensure that patients have access to high-quality, effective and safe medicines.

Cefic Director General, Marco Mensink, welcomed the announcement adding: “Europe used to be the world’s hub for producing pharmaceutical ingredients but over past decades our continent gradually lost its ability to manufacture the critical molecules that form the building blocks of essential medicines. This makes the EU highly dependent on the rest of the world and poses risks for European healthcare systems. We are therefore very encouraged by the Commission’s new pharmaceutical strategy and recent moves by Member States to bring back production of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients to European soil”.

Cefic stands ready along with our sector group, the European Fine Chemicals Group, to support the Commission’s efforts to roll out this strategy effectively.
