Empowering Sustainability through Green and Sustainable Chemistry

John Warner, a pioneering figure in green chemistry and Co-Founder of beyondbenign, defines green chemistry as a set of principles aimed at reducing or eliminating the use and generation of hazardous substances in the design, production, and application of chemical products.
At Cefic’s sixth edition of the Green and Sustainable Chemistry Bootcamps, this time held in collaboration with the University of St. Andrews, Warner led the discussions. He championed the importance of integrating green chemistry into university programs.
This, he believes, will equip future chemists with the knowledge and tools for more sustainable solutions. Warner also highlighted the pressing need to bridge the gap between academia, industry and regulatory bodies given the lack of awareness about pivotal regulations such as REACH among many academic researchers in chemistry.
Cefic’s Green and Sustainable Chemistry Bootcamps serve as a platform for participants to explore and discuss green and sustainable chemistry concepts, focusing on innovative solutions for sustainability challenges. The bootcamps cover various topics, including risk and safety management, sustainability-driven innovation, toxicology, biomimicry, the circular economy, and the environmental impact of plastics and green chemistry. They also address concerns related to chemicals and their effects on human health and the environment.
