Digital technologies are changing the landscape, offering new possibilities to improve efficiency and enable faster, more effective analysis. In the chemicals sector, Safety Data Sheets (SDS) – the documents used by manufacturers, distributors and downstream users to communicate chemical hazards and safe use requirements – are still largely exchanged in manual or PDF‑based formats, which can limit data reuse and make supply chain operations less efficient.
To improve the exchange of chemical product safety information, Cefic and the Downstream Users of Chemicals Co‑ordination Group (DUCC) have been working together on the digitalisation of SDS data. The project has now entered its pilot phase. As part of this, biopharmaceutical company Merck is implementing an in-house developed tool based on an open-source protocol, with the support of digital experts from the consultancy Coac. The ambition is to enable more efficient digital sharing of chemical product safety information, reduce administrative burden, and support faster processes.
