What if plants could become the building blocks for future textile materials? New polymer technologies are making it possible to transform renewable feedstocks into high-performance materials designed for applications such as textiles, packaging, bottles, and other consumer products, offering new alternatives to traditional fossil-based plastics.

A plant-based polymer for circular textile applications

Avantium has developed a plant-based and recyclable polymer made from renewable feedstocks. The material is based on polyethylene furanoate (PEF), a polymer produced using Avantium’s technology platform and designed as an alternative to fossil-based plastics.

The material can be produced from different renewable sources, including agricultural and forestry residues, as well as plant-based sugars. This flexibility enables the selection of the most sustainable, commercially available, local, feedstock, such as agricultural waste streams, corn stover, bagasse, and forest residues.

For textiles, PEF fibres are being developed as an alternative to conventional synthetic fibres such as polyester and nylon. The material offers strength and durability, while being designed for recyclability and a lower carbon footprint compared with traditional plastics.

Avantium is collaborating with partners across the textile value chain to explore new applications for bio-based fibres. In 2024, the company formed a strategic collaboration with Auping, Muller Textiles, Monosuisse, and Antex to develop PEF-based yarns for circular mattresses.

Further collaborations are exploring applications in bedding, upholstery, and other textile products. These projects demonstrate the potential of plant-based polymers to support new approaches to circular textile design.
