Textile materials used in shared environments such as vehicles, workplaces, and other high-use spaces may be exposed to more microorganisms. Developing effective antimicrobial surfaces requires solutions that are durable, safe, and compatible with existing textile manufacturing processes.

Combining technologies to create antimicrobial textile coatings

Covestro and Heraeus Precious Metals have collaborated to develop textile coatings that combine water-based polyurethane technology with an antimicrobial solution designed to help reduce microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses on surfaces.

The collaboration showed that the antimicrobial technology can be integrated into polyurethane textile coatings without requiring changes to established manufacturing processes. The resulting coated textiles combine a soft surface feel with durability, cleanability, and antimicrobial performance.

The antimicrobial technology uses a catalytic reaction involving two precious metals and moisture from the air to generate reactive oxygen species that help eliminate microorganisms. As this process is continuously renewed through chemical reactions, the antimicrobial effect can be maintained over time.
