A shift toward sustainability and renewable materials is reshaping how high-performance plastics are made. One example is bio-based polyamide 11 (PA11), high performance material derived from castor oil, a non-food crop that grows in dry and marginal regions and relies primarily on natural rainfall patterns, particularly in regions such as India.

High-performance material for textiles and beyond

Developed by Arkema, bio-based polyamide 11 (PA11) is used in fibre and resin applications and offers a combination of performance benefits combining the best of PA6, PA66, and PET fibers. It is lightweight, has a soft and cool touch, and shows strong abrasion resistance. It also absorbs very little water, dries quickly, and maintains good burst strength, making it suitable for demanding textile applications such as sportswear.
Beyond textiles, PA11 is used in a wide range of industrial sectors including automotive, electronics, healthcare, wire and cable, optics, and 3D printing. It performs well across a broad temperature range and maintains high dimensional stability, which helps products remain durable over time.

The material is also compatible with multiple processing technologies such as extrusion, injection molding, rotomolding, and additive manufacturing. This flexibility supports its adoption across different manufacturing systems.
In addition, PA11 is fully recyclable, contributing to circular material strategies while maintaining high performance in long-life applications. Polyamide 11 is produced since 1947 in several productions locations globally including France, USA, China, and in Singapore.
