Cefic welcomes new multi-stakeholder project to improve chemicals management in four African countries

A four-year joint pilot project has been launched across four African countries – Kenya, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, and Nigeria – to support national implementation of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). The GHS is one of the fundamental tools to achieve sound management of chemicals. Project partners will offer tailored, long-term support and capacity-building based on the respective national development plans and priorities.

Partners include the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM), the European Union, the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA), UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), and the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).

“GHS legislation and enforcement can be a long and challenging process, needing several years until it is fully in place. This project will test and evaluate the benefits of a long-term approach to supporting countries through the implementation and adoption process with financial and technical assistance.” said Marco Mensink, Cefic Director General and Council Secretary of ICCA.
