Innovative solutions are transforming plastic waste into valuable resources. By recycling PET bottles, new processes are helping to reduce plastic pollution while also contributing to energy efficiency. For instance, Huntsman is saving energy by transforming discarded PET bottles into high-performance insulation materials. Through an innovative process, even low-quality PET scrap—materials that would otherwise end up in landfills or oceans—can be repurposed into energy-efficient solutions.

This technology enables the production of polyurethane insulation, which is widely used in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, as well as everyday applications like refrigerators, coolers, and doors. The technology is based on a chemical recycling process that “digested” the flaked PET wastes into a usable polyol in polyurethane formulation.
Since 2014, the equivalent of five billion PET bottles has been recycled into insulation materials, with some products containing up to 60% recycled content. Certified processes ensure that these materials meet rigorous environmental standards, making them a sustainable choice for construction and industrial applications.
