The Safe Use of Diisocyanates® Training Project has set a new benchmark for chemical safety in the industry. What began as a small initiative has grown into a global effort, delivering 36 multi-lingual training packs and training over 1,000,000 individuals worldwide. Through its online platforms, Train-the-Trainer seminars, and licensing agreements with multinational companies, the project promotes a proactive safety culture across the chemical value chain.

Developed by ISOPA and ALIPA, European trade associations, the project brings together safety experts, industry leaders, and more than 20 downstream associations to ensure industrial and professional workers are equipped with the knowledge and skills to handle diisocyanates safely. Its launch was accelerated by the EU REACH restriction on diisocyanates, which mandates training for all industrial and professional users to reduce health risks such as respiratory sensitization and occupational asthma.

Comprehensive and accessible training

The training is available through the online platform www.safeusediisocyanates.eu, offering content in all EU languages and several others. The 36 training packs are modular, ranging from basic 40-minute courses to advanced three-hour sessions, covering safe handling, personal protective equipment, ventilation, hygiene, and spill management. Interactive videos and quizzes ensure engagement, and participants receive certificates upon completion.

Global reach and scalability

Building on its EU success, the project expanded globally in 2025 via www.safeusediisocyanates.com, offering training in languages such as Hindi, Turkish, with Arabic, Japanese, and Mandarin in development. Over 130 trainers have completed the program, creating a network of 222 internal and external trainers to scale knowledge worldwide.

License agreements with companies allow the training to be integrated into their Learning Management Systems (LMS), ensuring consistent safety standards across organizations. Supplementary materials, such as posters and flyers, reinforce key safety messages in workplaces.

Impact and recognition

Since its launch, the project has successfully registered over 850,000 participants on the EU platform and established a robust international training infrastructure. These achievements demonstrate how coordinated, accessible training can enhance workplace safety, regulatory compliance, and industry-wide safety culture. The Safe Use of Diisocyanates® Training Project exemplifies proactive leadership in Responsible Care, emphasizing product stewardship, sustainability, and worker protection.
