A leading initiative by the Czech Association of Chemical Industry – SCHP.

Following the launch of the European Commission’s EU Transition Pathway in early 2023, national associations of the EU chemical industry have been set a task: to develop national transition plans. The Transition Pathway aims to provide a clear roadmap outlining the conditions and actions needed for industry to successfully transition to 2050.

The Czech Association of Chemical Industry, along with its Board and members, has taken an active role in shaping this national transition plan. They are actively breaking down proposed measures into specific, targeted tasks for implementation within the Czech Republic. This process leverages existing strategic documents created by state authorities and other relevant sources, with ongoing discussions taking place with representatives of the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Integrating a structured approach

This comprehensive initiative follows a structured approach involving the creation, control, and measurement of the transition roadmap. The Czech Association of Chemical Industry’s team takes the lead in developing fundamental proposals, which are reviewed by the Association Board and an intersectoral working group, composed of representatives from the association, Ministry of Environment, and Ministry of Industry and Trade.

To ensure accountability, the Association’s team reports to the Association Board, and the intersectoral working group reports at the ministerial level. The initiative requires both human and financial resources, with staff allocations to intersectoral working groups, and support from national technology platforms.

Actions Taken

Several crucial steps have already been taken, showing the commitment of the Czech Chemical Industry to this initiative. These actions include:

  • Regular updates at each Association Board meeting since January 30, 2023.
  • Clarification meetings with Cefic coordinators and representatives to understand the applicability of measures proposed by EC in the original document.
  • Development possible scenarios of the industry development upon different macroeconomic conditions with recognition of 2 preferable scenarios allowing to achieve partially or fully carbon neutrality goals.
  • Modelling of the Czech chemical industry within the ic2050 model.
