Protecting biodiversity with an Action Plan

The Biodiversity Action Plan 2023-2027 by TREDI GROUPE SECHE ENVIRONNEMENT illustrates the company’s dedication to biodiversity conservation and enhancement. The initiative aims to create a positive environmental impact through concrete actions and employee engagement.

Background and Context

Since 2014, TREDI Salaise has been integrating biodiversity commitments into its operations. The site, one of Europe’s largest centres for hazardous waste treatment, has implemented various measures to support local biodiversity. These efforts are part of Séché Environnement’s broader Biodiversity Policy, known as Sustainable Actions for Nature (ADN) this commitment is also recognised through the initiative act4nature international allying businesses, public authorities, scientists, and environmental associations aiming to create an international collective dynamic to protect, value, and restore biodiversity, particularly through the involvement of CEOs from all sectors. The policy aims to establish ecological corridors, create habitats for local wildlife, and raise awareness among employees about the importance of biodiversity.

Objectives and Approach

The Biodiversity Action Plan 2023-2027 is guided by three main pillars: enhancing local biodiversity, educating employees, and fostering community partnerships. The plan is led by a site coordinator and a team of volunteer employees, known as the Nature Club. They work closely with ecologists to monitor and report on the progress of the initiatives.

Enhancing Local Biodiversity

One of the primary objectives is to create ecological corridors with diverse local plant species. These corridors facilitate the movement of species between biodiversity areas within the site and external areas. The plan includes the establishment of vegetated mounds, hedgerows, and ponds to create habitats for insects, birds, and amphibians. Insect hotels and nesting boxes are also installed to support local fauna.

Educating Employees

Raising awareness among employees is a crucial aspect of the plan. Various activities are organised to educate staff about biodiversity conservation. These include the creation of communication panels at the site entrance, biodiversity questionnaires, and participation in International Biodiversity Day.

The Nature Club also conducts regular monitoring of the site’s biodiversity and organises internal contests to engage employees in creating habitats for local wildlife.

Fostering Community Partnerships

The company’s commitment to biodiversity extends beyond its site boundaries. It manages two beehives with the oversight of an employee beekeeper, focusing on observation and conservation rather than on honey production. It also participates in the BeeOmonitoring initiative in partnership with local stakeholders, such as the Industrial Zone managers.

The company also considers developing additional local partnerships. These efforts have been recognised with awards from France Chimie Rhône-Alpes and France Chimie France.

Impact and Significance

The Biodiversity Action Plan 2023-2027 reflects TREDI’s progresses towards environmental sustainability. By enhancing local biodiversity, educating employees, and fostering community partnerships, TREDI is making significant strides in biodiversity conservation. This initiative not only benefits the environment but also strengthens the company’s commitment to responsible care and sustainable development.
