Pro-environment solutions

Climate Neutrality, Sweden

A leading initiative by Perstorp Group.

Sustainability is at the core of Perstop’s business strategy, and their Pro-Environment product portfolio plays a pivotal role in reducing both Perstorp’s and their customers’ CO2 emissions. In 2022, Perstorp introduced three innovative products, marking a significant step forward. In 2023, they achieved a remarkable milestone by unveiling the first polyols with 100% renewable content and a negative carbon footprint.

Innovation: Leading the way in sustainable chemistry

Perstorp stands out as the only specialty chemicals company with a comprehensive portfolio of products and solutions that meet several critical sustainability criteria:

  1. Renewable or Recyclable Raw Materials: Their products are based on renewable or recyclable raw materials, aligning with the circular economy.
  1. Traceable Mass Balance: Perstorp employs traceable Mass Balance to ensure control of all components across the entire value chain, guaranteeing transparency and traceability. This approach allows one raw material to be replaced by another within the same production unit.
  1. Transparent Emission Data: Customers receive transparent emission data for all Pro-Environment products, empowering them to extend the sustainability benefit further into their value chains.
  1. Certified Sustainability Standard (ISCC PLUS): All Pro-Environment products are certified according to the widely acknowledged sustainability standard, ISCC PLUS, providing credibility to their sustainability claims.
  1. Seamless Transition: Perstorp’s Pro-Environment products are drop-in solutions, ensuring customers can seamlessly integrate them without the need for re-qualification.
  1. Project Air: An essential enabler, Project Air seeks to create large-scale sustainable methanol production, serving as a raw material for several Pro-Environment products. This innovative project is positioned to be a game-changer in sustainable chemistry.

The true innovation lies not just in individual elements but in Perstorp’s holistic system thinking and systematic approach, spanning from strategic planning to operational implementation. No other chemicals company has presented anything akin to this to the market. Perstorp has also engaged in extensive dialogues with brand owners, aligning their Pro-Environment concept with customer demands, creating a “green shift” across various industrial value chains.

Impact: sustainable growth and society-wide benefits

Sustainability is a driving force and a fundamental element of Perstorp’s business strategy. The long-term impact of Pro-Environment products across multiple industrial value chains can be substantial and far-reaching. The traceable Mass Balance ensures complete control and transparency throughout the value chain, with third-party certification from ISCC verifying these processes.

Perstorp already provides product carbon footprint values for approximately 85% of its products based on sales volume and continues to expand this offering. This enables customers to extend the sustainability advantage further into their own operations and value chains.

Scalability: meeting growing demand

Perstorp has seen a rising demand for green products and solutions. The scalability of Pro-Environment products is primarily limited by the availability of raw materials. To ensure a consistent supply of renewable methanol, Perstorp has initiated Project Air. This project is pivotal for the continuous shift and scale-up of production capabilities for the Pro-Environment range.

Project Air leverages innovative technology to produce renewable methanol, using captured CO2, residual waste streams, biogas, and hydrogen from a new large electrolysis plant. This forward-looking project aims to commence large-scale production by 2027 and has received significant recognition. It was selected as one of the top 17 innovative sustainability projects by the European Union Innovation Fund in July 2022, with a grant of over EUR 1.8 billion.

Perstorp’s commitment to sustainable chemistry is not just a business strategy; it’s a groundbreaking initiative that promises to shape the future of the industry.
