The Chemelot industrial cluster is taking bold steps to become Europe’s first circular and climate-neutral chemical site, in collaboration with Hubs for Circularity (H4C). The Chemelot Circular Hub is a public-private alliance and a collective movement aimed at accelerating the transition to a circular society.

More than 100 projects have been launched to drive the development and deployment of innovative technologies. These projects focus on:

  • Mechanical and chemical recycling
  • The use of bio-based feedstock
  • Upgrading both existing and new infrastructure, including large-scale electrification, circular water management, and the transport of circular and bio-based feedstocks and products
  • Education, reskilling, and employment through its learning community and talent office, ensuring a skilled workforce for the green transition
  • Engaging citizens and regional cooperation in Chemelot’s transition

A hub for innovation and growth

Chemelot is fostering cutting-edge solutions, from transforming waste into valuable raw materials to scaling up sustainable industrial infrastructure. The Brightlands Chemelot Campus serves as a hub for piloting and demonstrating disruptive technologies, while Brightlands Circular Space – a joint venture with TNO and Maastricht University – focuses on the recycling and recyclability of plastics.

A positive impact on society

Beyond industry, the initiative seeks to actively involve local communities by creating a CO₂-free environment, stimulating economic growth, and generating new jobs in the circular economy. This transformation is expected to attract talent to Limburg, offering new opportunities in vocational and university-level education.
