The European Responsible Care Award is a recognition for the chemical industry’s work to enhance safe chemicals management and achieve performance excellence. This year’s winners were announced during Cefic’s annual Chemical Convention in Helsinki.
We are proud to present our 2019 winners:

Solvay – Chemical Safety Award
Solvay SA received the Chemical Safety Award for its worldwide ‘Product Stewardship Management System’, a global system to manage product safety. Through a structured and adaptable tool, business units around the world can embed safety in their operations, ensuring compliance and striving for continuous improvement.

Kemira Oyj – Environmental Responsibility Award
Kemira Oyj won the Environmental Responsibility Award for its ambitious ‘Ferrous Sulphate Waste to Product’ initiative. Kemira started extracting ferrous sulphate from an onsite landfill to process drinking water and treat wastewater. The initiative has reduced their dependency on virgin raw materials and has so far put 40 years of waste back into the circular economy.

Neste Oyj – Sustainable Workplace Award
Neste Oyj took the Sustainable Workplace Award for its global programme ‘Way Forward to Safety’. They have rolled out hundreds of workshops, e-learnings and awareness raising activities, and have integrated safety management processes. Safety is a core value at Neste and the programme has significantly increased safety performance and culture.

essenscia – National Associations Award
essenscia, the Belgian association for chemistry and life sciences industries won the National Associations Award for ‘Rethinking Chemical Logistics’. In collaboration with partner organisations, a process for sharing important tank cleaning information has been digitalised, making it available in real time and giving full transparency across the value chain.
The jury gave a special mention to two runner ups:
- The Russian Chemists Union for their project aimed at assessing companies’ performance implementing Responsible Care across Russia
- Kiilto Oy under the Environmental Responsibility category for providing a heating system based on circularity.
