Reducing dependence on natural resources

Using waste to generate feedstock resources for the production of chemicals is an effective technology, which is being used by an increasing number of companies. Not only does it help the industry reduce its carbon footprint, but it also minimises the amount of household waste.

BASF has developed a “biomass balance method” whereby it uses renewable resources such as bio-naphtha or biogas derived from organic waste or vegetable oils to partially replace fossil resources to produce chemicals. Renewable feedstock is fed into plants at the beginning of the production process: bio-naphtha into the steam cracker and biogas into the syngas plant.

The formulation and quality of the corresponding end products remain unchanged.

The method applies to many BASF products, such as superabsorbents, dispersions and plastics..
