Making chemical plants more resource efficient
Using by-products as raw materials for new production processes has become a successful strategy for improving resource efficiency, and the concept of chemical parks where by-products and waste could be exchanged between production plants is becoming mainstream.
Kemira Oyj has recently started production in its two new coagulant plants. Coagulants are iron and aluminum salts used to purify potable water and treat waste water. For these plants Kemira uses by-products generated by another chemical company Covestro at the same production sites.
In 2016, 27% of raw materials across all Kemira business segments came from recycled sources or industrial by-products from external partners. About 80% of raw materials for the production of coagulants came from recycled materials and industrial by-products from smelters, steel and metal manufacturing, and other industries.

Circular Economy 2.0
In 2015, the European Commission published its Circular Economy package to promote the transition from a linear economy into a circular economy, where resource efficiency is increased and the value of products and materials is maintained for as long as possible. When a product reaches the end of its life, options such re-use, remanufacturing and recycling can be explored to create additional value. Circular Economy can bring forth economic benefits, by contributing to growth and job creation and stimulating innovation, and in parallel provide environmental benefits.
